Healing from a Difficult Birth

How your baby is born matters. Birth can be joyful and empowering; it can also be difficult, disappointing or traumatic. Even if you and your are baby are completely healthy, lingering, unresolved emotions and thoughts about your birth experience can impact your sense of self and the way you mother your baby. You cannot change your birth experience, but you can come to understand what happened in a new way and transform how you feel about it. It is wise and self-caring for you as a mother to do healing work around the feelings of sadness, shame, guilt, confusion or whatever emotion you are experiencing. This healing work can happen anytime after you have given birth—weeks, months, or years later.
