Fenugreek is one of the most effective herbs for increasing breastmilk production. It has been successful in even the most difficult of cases. Fenugreek must be used with consistency to experience best results, therefore using a product that contains Fenugreek along with other herbs in the product is not recommended as it makes regulation of Fenugreek intake difficult and can cause an up and down milk supply (or even a drop in milk supply for some women).  Using it as a single-herb product such as this (meaning it is the only herb contained in the product), is highly effective and is extremely easy to use and regulate. Using it as a single herb product provides best results.

Gas:  In a small percentage of people, Fenugreek can cause gas in mother and/or baby. Adding Fennel Tincture, Nursing Tea Moringa Blend, Nursing Tincture Moringa Blend, or Tummy Tincture will help alleviate this problem while working to increase milk production.

Discontinuing the herb:  Once the milk supply is stable, you may discontinue the herb if you wish, but it is recommended to gradually wean down from Fenugreek should you decide to discontinue, as a sudden decrease in herb consumption can cause a drop in milk supply.

  • Long-term use is considered safe.
  • Fenugreek is not recommended for use during pregnancy as it has some slight uterine stimulating properties.
  • Fenugreek should be avoided by diabetics who are on strict insulin regimens as larger doses can lower blood sugar levels.  If diabetics choose to use Fenugreek, be sure to carefully monitor your blood sugar readings. Your medications may need to be adjusted.
  • Fenugreek is a member of the Legume family, therefore people with allergies or sensitivities should avoid Fenugreek as well.
  • Fenugreek may cause you to smell like maple syrup. This is not necessarily a bad thing - it just means the herb is active in your system.
  • If these contraindications prevent you from using Fenugreek, Goats Rue, Blessed Thistle, Nursing Tea Moringa Blend or Nursing Tincture Moringa Blend, Moringa or Shatavari would be great alternatives.  (See Related Products below.)

Ingredients: Organic Fenugreek powder in vegetarian capsules. No other additive or fillers are used. Our vegi-caps are certified non-GMO, vegan, and are Kosher and Halal certified. They are gluten-free and preservative-free.

Suggested Use: Start with three capsules three times a day. This is considered a very low dose for this particular herb. With Herb Lore's Fenugreek capsules or tincture, you should see results within 12-24 hours. If you do not see the desired results, you can increase your dosage. The amount that worked for our herbalist when she experienced low milk production was 7 caps (or 7 droppersful of the tincture) three times a day. We've had clients use more, but that's usually not necessary. It is fine to do though, as long as you and your baby are not experiencing any gas or tummy issues, and as long as blood sugar levels are not affected. (Diabetics, check your blood sugar levels often.)

If you start to over-produce breastmilk, reduce the amount of herb intake until you find the right balance for you. Everyone's bodies can all be very different and have different results.  Go with what works for you.

Remember, do not suddenly stop Fenugreek unless you absolutely have to (such as painful gas in mom or baby or unchecked diarrhea).  If you do have to stop Fenugreek use suddenly, as in these types of situations, be sure to use another product for increasing milk production to replace the Fenugreek that you're discontinuing.

Please note: Insulin-dependent diabetics should use the herb with caution or not at all, as it may affect their blood sugar and insulin medication needs. Larger doses can lower blood sugar levels in some people. Fenugreek is a member of the legume family. People with allergies or sensitivities to legumes should also avoid Fenugreek as a precaution.
