Swim diapers are specially designed diapers to be used in the water. They aren't meant to absorb or contain urine; any absorbent material would simply become soaked with water. Rather, they ensure that solids are contained long enough for you to take care of things.
You should use them with your baby for any water activities until they are completely done with potty training. Remember that water activities are full of distraction and competing sensations, so it becomes more difficult for your child to perceive their body's signals that it is time to go.
Generally required by public pools or shared facilities, it's important to use them if you happen to have a home pool as well. Draining and sanitizing a pool after an accident is a huge hassle that is expensive, and emotionally distressing for your child as well.
We love the Thirsties swim diapers for their signature double gusset, providing excellent containment and better fit by reducing gapping at the thighs, while slim enough not to interfere with movement or comfort. They are also adjustable with both rise & wing tab snaps, allowing you to customize the fit and working well for babies down to as small as 6 lbs. And meaning you only need two sizes to have your baby covered from newborn through average potty training age/weight.
The waterproof outer shell is lined with mesh for added comfort, and they are made in the USA.
