Fair Employment Training Series for Parents Who Employ Nannies or Regular Babysitters
Hand in Hand offers a 2-part workshop series for parents who employ or plan to hire a nanny or regular babysitter. Part I covers the basics of fair domestic employment, and Part II provides a hands-on clinic where employers draft a work agreement, ready to bring to a current or prospective employee. This series provides more extensive support to help the employer create a strong and mutually beneficial relationship with their employee.
Purpose, Objective, and Outcome (POP)

Purpose: Empower parents who hire nannies in California to uphold rights and dignity in the home workplace through education, practical tools, and support for implementing fair employment practices and clear work agreements.

Objective: Train at least 20 parents through this 2-part training series, with a goal of at least 20 individuals attending each session.

Outcome:66% (12) of participants will commit to implementing fair employment practices and/or establish written work agreements with the domestic workers they employ.
Two Part Series Description:
SESSION 1: Hiring a Nanny 101: The Basics of Fair Employment Training:(virtual)
This training is for parents and caregivers who employ nannies, regular babysitters and other domestic workers like housecleaners. It focuses on the basics of hiring, legal requirements as well as fair employment practices that promote worker dignity and support sustainable and mutually beneficial working relationships.
Participants Will Learn:

Employing domestic workers makes the home a workplace

The historical context of domestic work

Practical tips on hiring, interviewing, and managing domestic workers

Key California legal requirements
SESSION 2: Drafting Your Ideal Nanny Work Agreement (in-person @ NR)
This is a hands-on session to help nanny employers develop their ideal written work agreement that reflects key principles of legal and fair employment: clear communication, fair pay, paid time off, and health and safety protections.
By the end of the clinic, participants will:

Have a better understanding of the purpose of a work agreement.

Review the basic legal responsibilities in California and best practices for domestic employment.

Draft their ideal work agreement.

Build communication and collaboration skills to improve their relationship with the worker they employ.
Ideal Audience:

Parents or families that hire nannies,regular babysitters or other domestic workers.

The partner commits to conduct outreach and confirm at least 15 participants, new or current nanny employers, per session. We aim to engage the same group of participants across both sessions for continuity and deeper learning.
Topics covered include:
-Your rights and responsibilities as an employer, including employment laws, wages, sick leave & work agreements
-Recruiting, screening, and interview questions to hire the right candidate
-Health, safety, and background check requirements
-Ideas on how to create a positive, long-term relationship with your employee
-We will also discuss the unique aspects to create a successful share care arrangement. This is a great opportunity to meet other families who are interested in share care in your area.Checklists, forms, and support materials will be provided. The Nanny Manual by Alyce Desrosiers will be available to supplement the workshop materials.
